The Apartheid Wall
3 Men by Areej Mohammed, 15
From right to left:
- Under the man dated 1948 is written ‘al nakba’ which means catastrophe, referring to the villages in pre-1948 Palestine that were cleared of their indigenous people when Israel was created.
- Under 1967 is written ‘al naksa’, which also means catastrophe, describing the 6 day war in which Israel pushed outwards, eating into the West Bank, the Sinai Peninsular and the Golan Heights, thus creating more Palestinian refugees.
- Under the third man dated 2003 is written ‘al faksa’, suggesting that the Israeli’s are laughing in the face of the Palestinians who suffer again with Israel’s latest annexation of Palestinian land by the erection of the separation fence, separating Palestinians like those in Jayyous from their land on the other side.
Wolf and Teapot by Areej Mohammed, 15
Written under the bulldozer crushing an olive tree next to the teapot-like image of Al Aqsa mosque: ‘stones anger the army and the army cuts the trees’
Written under the wolf, the symbol of Israel with stones coming out of it’s mouth is written: ‘for every wolf has an end’. There is a Palestinian flag sticking out of the wolf’s body.
